    You are doing a whole lot of unnecessary operations, like extrude and vertex merge. I mean, it's ok to discover stuff on your own, but there is a much faster way: you just select both faces you want to bridge, right mouse click -> bridge faces, and you are basically done. If you are trying to do the same operation with different objects, you'll have to join them (select both and ctrl+j or just right mouse click -> join) and then bridge 🙂
